Bom Sucesso Resort Architecture Obidos, Portugal


1 hour north of Lisbon, on the Óbidos Lagoon, the Bom Sucesso Design and Golf Resort stands out as Portugal’s largest architectural neighborhoods for contemporary residential design. With over 600 buildings designed by 23 mostly Portuguese architects, it offers a unique snapshot of multiple generations of Portugal’s architectural schools from the early 2000s.

The resort features clear, minimalistic, architect-designed villas, including contributions from masters such as Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, and David Chipperfield.

Bom Sucesso Resort Unrealized Architectural Villas Óbidos, Portugal

At Bom Sucesso Resort, Phases 1 and 2 saw some plans evolve during development, with certain architect-designed villas replaced by alternative designs. Following the successful sale of these initial phases, the ambitious Phases 3 & 4 were planned, involving 13 additional architects, including renowned German architect Meinhard von Kollhoff and Lisbon-based architect Ricardo Bak Gordon.

These unrealized phases would have expanded the architectural neighborhood to over 1,000 villas, further enriching the resort’s showcase of Portuguese contemporary architecture. Although Phases 3 & 4 were never realized, several exceptional villa designs remain, highlighting the resort’s original vision and the innovative spirit of its contributing architects
