This seafront building, a personal investment by renowned architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, embodies a harmonious blend of modern design principles and contextual sensitivity. Souto de Moura’s vision was to create a structure that respects its 19th-century surroundings while embracing contemporary architectural language. He believed that “there is no point in designing 21st-century windows in the 19th-century manner,” leading to the incorporation of expansive horizontal windows that frame the stunning coastal landscape.

The building’s design is characterized by its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, with a focus on functionality and interaction with the environment. The horizontal windows not only offer panoramic views but also enhance the connection between the interior spaces and the natural beauty outside. To address the challenge of western light, Luisa Penha, an architect and Souto de Moura’s wife, suggested the use of vertical brise-soleils. The project faced challenges when a neighbor objected to the original design, fearing it would negatively impact his property. This led to a thoughtful redesign, which included recessing a series of side windows. This modification not only appeased the neighbor but also enhanced the building’s overall aesthetic and functionality.
